is cheerleading a sport?

People say that cheerleading is a sport while others say that its not. Now me , I believe that cheerleading is more of a sport than other activities that they would call sports. It's not what you think girls jumping up and down on the sidelines at a game. All star cheerleading takes endurance to get through a two minute and thirty seconds put together by stunting tumble and dancing. Now people may think that oh that doesn't take anything I could do that without training at all. But, hey don't be saying that unless your willing to walk into the cheer gym and try a routine. 2 to 3 or even 4 times a week your in there working hours at a time to try and be perfect for those two minutes and thirty seconds. My coach always told my team "no body's perfect but for those two minutes and thirty seconds you can be pretty close." Then people say competitions are just a way for you to preform yeah it's a performance but its also a time for you to be fighting for that top spot that first place that national title that world bid! It's way more than just a performance. So, cheerleading is a sport just like football, basketball, soccer, lacross.

  1. Great post, Kylie. Why do you think people have this skewed vision of cheerleading being just cheers on the sidelines of games? What can be done to make it more clear the physical demands on a competitive cheerleader?

It was sort of a big deal when ESPN first started covering national cheer competitions - but I would think that this was a step in the right direction as it made it more public what a cheerleading routine consisted of.

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. People deffinatly think that cheerleading is just girls on the sidlines because if you watch any movie that's what it is and people only think of highschool cheerleaders and don't even know that all-star cheerleading exists. The way that people are actually going to know what it really takes is to actually know what their talking about before they start saying that it's not a sport or whatever.

ps. does this count for last week or this week?

  3. I definitely agree that the media's portrayal of cheerleading is not helping your cause. When cheer teams perform outside of the football games (like at last week's assembly) do you think that helps people notice that it demands more skill than just sideline cheering? What can make the sport more visible?

We stop counting posts for the previous week on Tuesdays, so this counts for week 2.
