ACT scores.

The ACT the test almost everyone dreads about taking just because they know how much it really counts. I feel like it shouldn't count as much as it does when colleges are looking to see weather or not your going to be able to attend their school. Kids might have had this dream to go to that school and worked hard and did everything that they could do but just didn' t get a high enough act score they then wouldn't be able to go to the school of their dreams because of it. Also, what if you have a student who has never really been a good test taker throughout high school they have a lesser chance of being able to go to whatever school they might want to all because they didn't get a certain score on the act. I think that the ACT should be maybe more of a placement of what classes and more of guidelines for the people of the university when helping the student. But, when it comes to them people able or not being able to go to a certain school I think that that could be a little bit much for just one test. Also, everyone should be required to take a ACT prep class to get the best results from everyone on this. All the test expectations should be the same throughout all universities and they need to base more about the person like what there like and what they have done for the community sports and their grades but, all those things should be more important that one test score that from what I hear can be pretty challenging. But, in the end my opinion is that yes, we all need to take the ACT but no it shouldn't be such a big part of what university you get into the person can be completely different from what shows up one their ACT score.

  1. Kylie,
Great post on a great topic! The ACT is pretty controversial across the board - I couldn't agree more. As a teacher I see what the ACT does to students as it stresses them out and creates students who judge their capabilities by one number. I certainly agree that the system is flawed and I'm confident that change is on the horizon. On the other hand, I understand why colleges need to rely on the ACT. When you have so many kids from so many backgrounds competing for the same spots in a college, you need SOME common way of looking at them. Grade points and class ranks are so subjective to the school that you're coming from - a 3.5 in Grayslake could be entirely different from a 3.5 in a small town school in down-state Illinois.

    Well done!
